M'studio院外
On August 26, 2018, the exhibition "Napoleon" curated by Dana Ding was officially opened at M'STUDIO in Black Bridge. The original meaning of "Napoleon" refers to the dessert. Here it indicates people’s first impression of comics – creamy, sweet and a branch of the popular culture. It also represents the multi-layered narratives and images in the comics. Due to the government demolition, Black Bridge is now almost a wasteland. M'STUDIO, an independent art space, is one of the last remaining landmarks here. The venue is romantic but also helplessly sad, just like the isolated island to which the French emperor Napoleon was exiled.
The participating artists Nhozagri and Xiang Yata are both members of indie comics group. However, their styles are different and their focuses are different as well. Nhozagri chooses to weaken the narratives in her works, breaking down “stories” into strange and interesting images by using different types of media. Xiang Yata’s works are rational and profound. She has devoted nearly a decade to create Optometry, using more than 200 pages to describe the infinite combination of images in just one second. They have been working hard to explore the possibilities of comics, making us think about the following questions: Can a story have a shape? What world can we see in just one second? Can indie comics be experimental and avant-garde? How to present indie comics in an exhibition?
