MANSENG’s creations have a wide range of inspiration, including natural phenomena such as "moon", "rainbow", and "clouds"; plant forms like "melon" and "gourd"; practical objects like "baskets" and "dishes"; geometric shapes like “straight” and “harmony”; as well as imitations of ancient vessels. This variety in inspiration helped to break away from the traditional styles that had been passed down for generations, bringing about a fresh new era in teaware design.
The themes of MANSENG's inscriptions can be broadly categorized into four main types:
Cut tea cut shape, depicting the form with vivid descriptions: Based on the shape of the teapot, inscriptions are used to describe it in an imaginative way without being limited to mere description but instead extending into lively anecdotes. For example, on a gourd-shaped teapot is written: “A picture of gourds painted, delighting kinship conversations.”
Cut tea cut jade: Focusing on brewing tea and enjoying it for one's own cultivation and nourishment: As teas are brewed in these pots, MANSENG's inscriptions often emphasize the joy derived from savoring tea while reflecting on life philosophies. For instance, an inscription reads: “Pull up straight (the handle), call out to others; public servant Gon Sun enjoys it sweetly.” This implies that even bitter teas can taste sweet when enjoyed mindfully.
Moral admonitions or philosophical sayings: These serve as reminders or inspirations for life principles: Some inscriptions resemble proverbs or wise sayings meant to guide people through various aspects of their lives.
Writing landscapes or expressing emotions with poetic language evoking imagination: In some cases, they write poetry-like passages describing landscapes or expressing emotions using metaphors drawn from nature itself - all within a small space - creating an atmosphere that resonates deeply with readers' souls.
These categories showcase how Chen Man-sheng was not only skilled at craftsmanship but also possessed profound insights into human nature which he conveyed through his artistic endeavors - leaving behind timeless legacies that continue to inspire us today
